Internet imagesOutlined here are the age restrictions governing the use of social media. They are there to help keep your children safe.

Facebook requires everyone to be at least 13 before they can create an account. Creating an account with false info is a violation of our terms. This includes accounts registered on the behalf of someone under 13.

The minimum age to open an account on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Kik, and Snapchat is 13.

YouTube requires account holders to be 18, but a 13-year-old can sign up with a parent’s/carers permission.

For Vine and Yik Yak it’s 17.

Please be aware to help protect your child:

  • 24 per cent of 13 to 18 year olds suffer online trolling
  • Four in five have seen or heard online hate in last year
  • Three quarters of 10 to 12-year-olds use social media despite the age limit of 13.
  • 49 per cent use Facebook and 41 per cent use Instagram
  • One in ten 16 to 19-year-olds know someone who has engaged in a potentially illegal online activity
  • Almost half of 10 to 18-year-olds say social media companies don’t take bullying seriously enough                                                                                                                                           Data: Kaspersky Lab, BBC Newsround, UK Safer Internet Centre
