The Junior Road Safety team and Bikeit! Crew don’t like to sit still for very long and over the Summer managed to gain two more awards. Go Gomer! Such a brilliant achievement.
Lots of hard work over the last couple of years encouraging people to ‘ditch the car’ and educating both children and adults about the importance of sustainable travel has lead to Gomer Junior School being awarded the national Modeshift STARS bronze and silver award. We are one of only two schools in Gosport to have received the award – achieved at the end of last term but awarded on Tuesday of this week.
Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.
The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children and young people.
Every school in England (outside of London) can participate in Modeshift STARS for free. On completion of an application for Modeshift STARS, schools will automatically have a brand new national standard School Travel Plan.
As of September 2017, 64 organisations representing around 13,000 schools in England are signed up to Modeshift STARS. In Hampshire over 500 school are taking part in the scheme, only 46 have achieved bronze, 15 silver and 5 gold. In Gosport only 5 have achieved silver and none have achieved gold yet.  Gomer Junior School is very close to achieving gold and the team are beavering away working towards it.
On Tuesday, the Deputy Mayor, Mrs Furlong and Helen Harris, Travel Planning Manager for Hampshire County Council presented the JRSO and Bikeit! Team with their Bronze and Silver awards.  A very proud moment for the team and a fantastic recognition of the hard work they do. We are very grateful to the external support we have received to make this happen. We are now working towards our gold. Watch this space…
