Year 3 pupils have been busy investigating how light and shadows work through a range of hands-on activities. In Science, they conducted an experiment to find out how the distance of a light source affects the size of a shadow. Pupils worked carefully to carry out a fair test, changing one variable while keeping others the same, and recording their observations.

Learning didn’t stop there! Pupils also explored shadows in PE, using movement and positioning to create different shapes and sizes. To deepen their understanding further, Year 3 carried out an outdoor investigation, marking their shadows in chalk at different times of the day. This helped them see how shadows change as the position of the sun moves across the sky.

A fantastic example of practical, engaging learning in action.

Before the holiday, our Year 5 pupils took part in a fantastic art workshop led by Never Such Innocence and what an experience it was.

The workshop, part of the Month of the Military Child, focused on the theme ‘Winds of Change’, encouraging pupils to reflect on the experiences of children from military families and the changes they may face. Through creativity and discussion, pupils explored these ideas thoughtfully, producing powerful and imaginative artwork.

The sessions brought together both service and non-service children, highlighting empathy, understanding and shared experiences. It was wonderful to see pupils so engaged; working collaboratively, expressing their ideas with confidence and taking real pride in their creations.

The artwork produced will contribute to a wider display as part of a Best School Display competition, alongside other schools across the King’s Group Academies in Gosport.

A huge thank you to Never Such Innocence for providing this fully funded opportunity and giving our pupils a meaningful platform to express themselves through the arts.

As our Year 6 pupils continue working hard to prepare for the transition to secondary school, we are also focusing on the importance of developing a wide range of essential life skills. While academic readiness is key, learning how to collaborate, communicate effectively, and take responsibility is just as vital for success in the next stage of their education.

This week, pupils have been exploring these skills through hands-on LEGO projects. They have been developing their scientific understanding by investigating pulleys, levers, and cogs, while also practising how to carefully follow instructions to build a variety of creations. Along the way, they have demonstrated excellent teamwork and clear communication as they worked together to solve problems. And, perhaps most importantly, they have been learning the value of tidying up after themselves, showing responsibility and respect for their shared learning environment.

At the start of the new term we are delighted to share our Big Walk and Wheel 2026 results… and what an achievement it is! Thanks to the incredible effort from our children, families and staff, we are proud to announce:

🏅 5th place overall across the entire country

🌍 1st in England South (Medium Primary category)

📈 Our highest number of journeys ever recorded in the past four years

This is a fantastic reflection of our school community’s commitment to staying active, making sustainable travel choices, and supporting one another. To see our children embracing walking, wheeling and healthier lifestyles with such enthusiasm has been brilliant and to achieve record-breaking participation makes it even more special.

Well done, Team Gomer. We are incredibly proud of you all!

Yesterday, we came together as a whole school community to celebrate something special: thirty incredible years of service from our wonderful Mrs Austin. Thirty years. That’s generations of children, thousands of families, and countless staff who have been welcomed, supported and cared for by the calm, kind and ever-smiling presence at the heart of our school office.

Mrs Austin really is the ‘Queen of the Office’. She has been the one who always knows the answer, solves the problem, finds the missing jumper, calms worries, and somehow keeps everything running smoothly (often with a well-timed cup of tea too!). Our celebration assembly was full of laughter, memories and appreciation. From poems and stories to some brilliant ‘Mrs Austin maths’ (did you know she’s made over 2,000 cups of tea and sent tens of thousands of emails?!), it was a wonderful way to reflect on just how much she has given to KA Gomer over the years.

What stood out most, though, was not just what she has done, but who she is. Warm, professional, endlessly patient, and always with a sense of humour, Mrs Austin has helped make our school the safe, happy and welcoming place it is today. Mrs Austin – thank you.

Last week, Year 4 enjoyed a workshop delivered by Chartwells who are the catering compamy serviogn KA Gomer. Linked with their Geography learning, ‘Our Planet’ and Personal Development Learning (citizenship ‘looking after our environment’), children explored how their food choices can impact the environment. From why we have Meat-Free Mondays (meat production creates more carbon), to considering our food wastage and why buying locally can be environmentally friendly. Children then discussed the pros and cons of plastic, and reflected on the impact this material has on our planet (and other creatures living on it). They built upon their understanding of what we mean by – REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE and even calculated their own carbon footprints! Children engaged really well and demonstrated thoughtfulness in their contributions. They were keen to take home the sheet given to them to discuss with their families at home how they could reduce their carbon footprint. Thank you Chartwells.

Earlier this week, Year 4 had a fantastic morning taking part in an exciting workshop with The School of Noise. From sonic logos and musical fruit to theremins and Morse code, there was so much for the children to explore, experience and enjoy. The session began with children sharing their prior knowledge about sound:

“It is what we hear”

“It is caused by vibrations”

“It is measured in decibels”

They then explored new vocabulary linked to sound and were especially surprised to learn how it connects to fire, weapons and plants:

Scientists are exploring how sound can help extinguish fires

Sonic devices can be used by authorities to manage large crowds

Some plants produce ultrasonic sounds when under attack, which animals like birds can detect

Children investigated how sound travels through different states of matter. Using a slinky, they observed sound waves moving through solids, listened to vibrations with a contact microphone, and even used a hydrophone to hear bubbles underwater. One of the highlights was hearing an alarm clock placed in a vacuum, demonstrating that without particles, sound cannot travel!

The excitement continued as pupils explored a range of hands-on sound stations, including:

Musical fruit

Playing the theremin

Sand art on a vibrating plate

Confuser headphones with tuning forks

A model of the human ear

Morse code activities

It was a brilliant morning full of curiosity, discovery and hands-on learning. Well done, Year 4 and a big thank you to The School of Noise for such an inspiring experience. A final thank you to the PTA who paid for this event – wonderful!

This week, our children have been doing an incredible job taking part in the Big Walk and Wheel challenge, recording their journeys on Travel Tracker. At the moment, we are sitting in an amazing 7th place out of 1,071 … what an achievement! With just 3 days to go, this is our moment to push even further. Every journey counts, so we’re encouraging all of our children and families to make that extra effort to walk, wheel, scoot or cycle to school wherever possible. And, if you need to drive to school part way, please use our Park and Stride site so you can finish your journey on foot.

A huge congratulations as well to our feeder school, Gomer Infant School, who are currently in 1st place and how amazing that every single child in the school has walked, scooted or cycled everyday this week. What an incredible achievement!

Now it’s over to us… Let’s Go Gomer! Can we break into the top 3 before the end of the week? We think we can do it. Every step, pedal and wheel makes a difference. Let’s finish strong.

Every Friday, our school comes together for one of the highlights of the week, which is our Celebration Assembly, proudly led by our Associate Headteacher Mrs Digby. This special time gives us the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the fantastic achievements of our children, both in and out of school. From excellent effort in lessons to demonstrating our school values every day, we love shining a spotlight on what makes our learners so brilliant.

A key part of the assembly is our Child of Character Award, which reflects our core values of Honesty, Faith and Courage. These awards recognise children who consistently demonstrate these qualities and set a wonderful example to others across the school. We are also always amazed by what our children achieve beyond the classroom. Each week, we hear about an incredible range of talents and successes and last week was no exception; from martial arts, to rugby and dance to gymnastics and more. A huge well done to our Isle of Wight Festival dancers for their fantastic success, and to our gymnast for achieving impressive scores.

Our assemblies often run over time, but for all the right reasons; we simply have so much to celebrate. Well done, everyone. You make us incredibly proud.

Keep being brilliant, children – Go Gomer!
