Year 3 has been learning about the impact of earthquakes in Japan, understanding why the country is particularly susceptible to these natural disasters and the importance of earthquake-proofing homes. Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. This learning is part of our Geography curriculum and ties in with our commitment to developing an International Dimension in our students’ understanding of the world. their Engineering Habits of Mind, with a focus on problem-solving, our Year 3 pupils designed and built earthquake-proof homes using LEGO. The children explored features such as reinforced walls and stable foundations to create structures that could withstand shaking. After completing their builds, they tested their designs to see how well they could resist an ‘earthquake’ simulation. We are thrilled to report that there were many successful designs! Please take a look at one such success in the featured photo.
