Before half term, Year 3 began an exciting journey into Ancient Egyptian traditions by starting the process of mummifying a fish. As part of their learning, the children carefully removed the fish’s organs, placing them respectfully into homemade canopic jars, just like the Egyptians did thousands of years ago. The fish were then buried in salt to draw out the moisture and begin the preservation process.

Yesterday marked the big reveal! The children were amazed to discover how much the fish had changed. They noted how stiff and firm the fish had become, compared to the floppy texture they remembered from before the break. Working carefully, the children helped continue the mummification process, wrapping the fish and preparing them for the next stage of their journey to the afterlife.

Later this week, the class will take the final steps by constructing sarcophagi and tombs for their fish. These will serve as resting places to complete the transition into the afterlife, rounding off an immersive learning experience that brought history to life.
