This week, Year 5 had an opportunity to try something completely new—fencing. The taster session was designed to introduce pupils to a sport they may never have experienced before, and they embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and curiosity.
Fencing is a dynamic sport with a rich history that dates back centuries. Originally developed as a form of military training and self-defence, it has evolved into a fast-paced Olympic discipline that combines agility, strategy, precision, and respect. During the session, our pupils began learning the basic stances, footwork, and how to safely engage in bouts using foam foils.
This exciting opportunity aligns brilliantly with the Key Stage 2 national curriculum, particularly in PE, where pupils are encouraged to take part in competitive sports and activities that build character and promote resilience. Fencing also develops coordination, focus, and quick decision-making. These are all essential life skills.
We are proud of the Year 5 children for stepping out of their comfort zones, trying something unfamiliar, and showing such determination as they began to develop new techniques. Who knows, we might even have some future champions in the making! A huge thank you to Premier Education for making this opportunity possible and for delivering such an engaging and memorable session.
