Year 4 started the term with an exciting (if somewhat messy) science investigation demonstrating great teamwork and curiosity. This term, they will be learning all about the human digestive system and today’s investigation helped them to understand the process our food goes through after being chewed.

The bag represented the stomach which we filled with some food, water (for saliva) and orange juice (gastric juices). Children then mimicked the job of the strong muscles of our stomach to break down the food in the bag, before passing it into the stocking (the small intestine) before it finally travelled into a large cup with a hole in it (the large intestine and anus). The trays collected all the liquid (nutrients) during this process just like our body does during the process of digestion.

The children will be using their growing knowledge of the digestive system in their writing to create some fascinating and factually accurate information texts (watch this space!).
