Our children have been enjoying an exciting new opportunity thanks to the STEM in a Box Challenge, a fantastic resource kindly donated to our school through Raising Robots and their sponsors. Each box contains everything you need to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in a fun, hands-on way.
Last week, during a mini-session with Mr Merrifield, the children took on a particularly tricky task. They had to build a design by only looking at it, without touching it or following any written instructions! This was far more challenging than it first sounded and encouraged the children to think carefully, observe closely, and work together creatively to solve the problem.
Throughout the activity, the children used their Engineering Habits of Mind (EHoM). These ways of thinking and behaving that engineers use every day. This includes being curious, creative, resilient, and collaborative, as well as being able to improve and adapt ideas when things don’t go to plan.
Equally important were the soft skills the challenge required. Speaking and listening, teamwork, and communication were crucial to success. Children had to share ideas clearly, listen to others’ suggestions, and work cooperatively to achieve a shared goal. These are all valuable skills that will help them in every area of learning.
Please note, children pictured in red due to this activity being on our Show Racism the Red Card day.
