At Gomer, we believe in the power of music and embrace it in every year group. We value the attitudes and dispositions that come from playing an instrument, understanding that music not only enhances our creativity but also teaches important life skills like patience, perseverance, and dedication. In Year 3, students are currently learning to play the recorder—an instrument commonly introduced in primary schools due to its accessibility. While it’s often the first step in musical education, mastering the recorder and producing a beautiful melodic sound takes considerable practice. To inspire the children and showcase the full range of sounds the recorder can make, we were fortunate to have our resident recorderist, Mrs. Mulhall, perform a mini-concert for the class. The children were captivated by the performance and gave her a well-deserved round of applause. Mrs Mulhall shared that she had played the recorder as a child and even completed her Grade 6 in playing the treble recorder. She offered some valuable tips to the children on how to play well, encouraging them to practice and keep improving. Despite not having played for some years, Mrs. Mulhall humbly critiqued herself and noticed from the photos that she could improve her posture—a fantastic example of lifelong learning and self-reflection. Go Gomer!
