Year 6 have been enjoying their ‘real life maths’ unit this half term. They have learnt about salaries, found out about tax – why we pay it and how it is applied to salaries at different percentages, considered the differences between wants (luxuries) and needs (necessities) and worked on a monthly budget based on their ideal job and the income that would give. Year 6 have shown a great level of maturity during this unit, particularly today in our money sense workshop, where they had to step into the role of detective and solve the crime. Fraud had been committed – but how? It was their job to examine the evidence, access the risks and determine an outcome. Thoughtful discussion filled the hall as children applied their understanding about keeping their money safe and protecting themselves against fraud.
