While our children have started their well-earned half-term break, today has been a super day of learning for our staff at King’s Academy Gomer. And what better way to celebrate our love for learning than on Valentine’s Day. We began the day with an address from our CEO, Mr Nick Cross, who encouraged us to continue embedding our vision—opportunity and success on a global stage—and our values of honesty, faith, and courage into everything we do. His words set the tone for a day filled with professional growth and collaboration.

Next, we delved into a refresher session of ‘Opening Doors’ with the one and only Bob Cox. Immersing ourselves in the world of literature and writing, we explored ways to ignite a love for reading, writing and creativity in our classrooms. It was a true reminder of the power of high-quality texts to inspire both children and teachers alike! Our Teaching Assistants also engaged in a variety of sessions, further developing their skills and learning new strategies to support children across the curriculum. Their dedication to continuous improvement is invaluable in helping every child thrive.

A highlight of the day was sharing this learning experience with one of our family schools, King’s Academy Rowner. We always feel welcomed when we visit Rowner, and it was wonderful to strengthen our shared sense of belonging within our wider team. At King’s Academy Gomer, we love learning—and by investing in our own development, we ensure we provide the very best for our children.

As we approach National Online Safety Week, we were delighted to welcome one of our school governors, Mr Justin Allen, for an insightful visit focused on online safety. Mr Allen met with our School Councillors across Year 3, 4, 5, and 6 to discuss how we stay safe online and to hear directly from our children about their learning and experiences in the digital world. The discussions provided an opportunity to assess our pupils’ awareness of online safety and their ability to apply key safety principles. We are pleased to share that our children demonstrated a strong understanding of important online safety topics, including:

• Protecting personal information – Pupils clearly understood why they should never share personal details such as full names, addresses, or phone numbers online.
• Handling online interactions responsibly – Children spoke about how to respond appropriately to messages from strangers and recognised the importance of reporting anything that makes them uncomfortable.
• Recognising risks and taking action – Pupils confidently explained how they assess whether a website, game, or app is safe to use and how to handle online unkindness by blocking, reporting, or seeking help from a trusted adult.

It was particularly encouraging to hear how well-embedded online safety education is across our school. Children were able to recall key lessons from classroom activities, assemblies, and quizzes, showing that our approach is making a real impact. Many of our pupils highlighted the step-by-step guidance from teachers as a helpful way to reinforce their learning, and they appreciated the regular reminders about staying safe online.

A key takeaway from the discussions was that children feel safe when using the internet both at school and at home, thanks to the support from teachers, parents, and carers. Some of our School Councillors suggested that learning more about specific app settings, would be useful, demonstrating their proactive approach to digital safety. We extend our thanks to Mr Allen for taking the time to speak with our pupils and for his report which has been shared with our Local Governing Body. The report highlights the strengths of our online safety education at King’s Academy Gomer.

As we move into National Online Safety Week, we encourage all our families to continue the conversation at home. Together, we can ensure our children remain safe, responsible, and confident digital citizens!
