Gomer Junior was subject to an Ofsted (Section 8) inspection on 11 and 12 February 2020. The purpose of a Section 8 inspection is to determine if a school continues to be good and the focus of the inspection is on the ‘quality of education’. The feedback from the Inspector to the school Leadership and Trustees confirmed that we continue to be a ‘good’ school and are now even better than our previous inspection. For example, the excellent behaviour of children and deep thinking of the teachers was praised, in addition to the ability of leaders, ‘who ensure that pupils learn effectively and are committed to them having a skill set for life long learning’.  As Ian Potter (GFM Chief Executive) said, “The school couldn’t have done better and the leadership, teachers, staff and children deserve full recognition and praise for all that has been achieved by Team Gomer.”

The inspection evidence was overwhelmingly confident about the school’s ability to provide for its community and recognised that, ‘learning comes to life at Gomer Junior School’. A further example of validation for how much the school has progressed since the last inspection was the recognition of  our now broad and pioneering curriculum offer and the children’s excitement and engagement with a variety of learning opportunities. The school’s commitment to the children as ‘Gosport Learners’ and consideration to their whole education journey was celebrated. The inspector praised the Gosport and Fareham Multi-Academy Trust (GFM) for ensuring all its schools work collaboratively and with the same moral endeavour to enable best outcomes for our children.

The Inspector saw the children learning very well at Gomer which was evidenced further through scrutiny of the children’s books. Following our focus on reading this year, it was noted that much thought has gone into reading within the curriculum. The Inspector observed our calm and purposeful learning environments. In particular, she loved our library and saw a  wide range of reading; much of which was challenging. She recognised the teacher’s ability to engage our children with reading and the array of opportunities we provide.

Although not reflected in the report, we are very proud of the inspector’s commendation in her verbal feedback of the Deep Dive into computing. It was acknowledged that the curriculum has been well thought through and is designed for pupils to learn and build on that learning and to develop skills. The children could talk confidently about Computing at Gomer and the opportunities and kit they have access to.

The school was also said to be very welcoming and inclusive. Thank you for the feedback you provided which demonstrated significant happiness with the education provided at Gomer. One parent reported, ‘this is an excellent school with caring staff with high expectations of the children academically and socially’.  Another member of the community said, ‘the school is outstanding because they are always reflecting and reviewing. They are also very supportive.’ The report captures how proud the children are of their school and what a happy and vibrant school Gomer Junior is.

The success of the report is due to the commitment and cohesion of Team Gomer. Mrs Mulhall wholeheartedly joins the Gomer Junior Community in feeling very proud of all who enable our school to be the fabulous place it is.
