Go Gomer! We love sport at Gomer and embrace it during and after the school day. We are working towards securing a Gold School Games Mark in 2019/2020.

Sainsbury’s School Games Mark: 2018 – 2019

Following three consecutive years of a school games award, we accepted a silver for the academic year 2018-2019. We were aiming for another gold (which would have secured us a platinum too), and, achieved that in every category other than informing our community fortnightly about School Games – we did this only half-termly. Moving forward, we will respond to the feedback from our evaluation and work towards a gold in 2019-2020;  expect to hear more updates via text, the website and newsletter.

Sainsbury’s School Games Mark: 2017 – 2018

Gomer Junior School is proud to announce that it was, for the third year running, awarded the ‘Sainsbury’s Schools GOLD Award’ for providing wide ranging and high quality sporting opportunities for its pupils. A new addition to our curriculum, fencing and bowls, highlights our commitment to sporting endeavours.

We were delighted to have achieved another GOLD award at the end of the academic year 2017/2017. We are are maintaining a gold standard in the current academic year  with both in school and inter-school clubs, training and competitions.

Associate Head Teacher Mr Potter and PE and Inclusion Leader Mrs Wilden   are making full use the school’s involvement with the Gosport Schools Sports Partnership, Chelsea FC and Alverstoke Tennis Club in order to provide sporting opportunities to all pupils within the school. Miss Holden is leading the ‘Change for Life’ programme in school. Gomer will continue to offer a  ‘Gomer Mile’/Gomer Dance break time activity slot to encourage participation in sport and to improve levels of pupil fitness. Additionally, Head Teacher Mrs Mulhall continues to promote the sporting prowess of the school through her a Sports Ambassador role within the Youth Sport Trust.

Year 5 Pupil: “It was great fun taking part in the table tennis tournament as it is not something usually done at junior school.”
Year 6 pupil: “It was good to have runners in the area cross-country final even though they did not win.”

We have enjoyed another energetic and highly successful year of sport. The pupils from all year groups have competed in a number of intra-school and interschool events and competitions, with many victories and special performances along the way.

Deputy Head Teacher  Mr Potter has made full use the school’s involvement with the Gosport Schools Sports Partnership in order to provide sporting opportunities to all pupils within the school. Miss Holden, PE Leader has been approached for Gomer to be local mentors for the C4L Programme due to our many successes. Additionally, Mrs Mulhall is a Sports Ambassador for the Youth Sport Trust due to our sporting offer.

Year 3 pupils were involved in a cluster gymnastics festival, held at a local secondary school. One of the teams entered was successful in reaching the final.

The whole of the lower school, Years 3 and 4 took part in a tennis festival at Alverstoke Tennis club, where again, success was found.

Year 5 took 8 teams to a Futsal competition. This is a quick fire version of indoor soccer and is great for fitness and skill. All the top places were awarded to Gomer teams.

Cricket has come to the fore this year. Year 4 was involved in the Autumn term which they thoroughly enjoyed. In June, Year 6 took a girls team and a mixed team to two separate tournaments at Privett Park, Gosport. Both teams were successful and will be participating in the Hampshire finals at The Ageas Bowl towards the end of June.
