Curriculum Overview for the year:

Autumn Term 2025

Year 4 will travel around the continent of Europe this term, virtually visiting different capital cities. In Art we will be creating some beautiful pastel skylines – focussing on different skylines across Europe and bringing them to our classroom.

In our writing lessons we will be composing a range of fiction and nonfiction text starting with information texts (linked with our science learning about the human digestive system) and seasonal poetry.

In maths, we will start the year focusing on number and place value, followed by addition and subtraction, and finally multiplication and division. Every Friday, we will complete an arithmetic test and a times tables quiz to assess our mathematics knowledge and identify areas for improvement. Year 4 will have a multiplication test in June, so we will regularly use Chromebooks to practise on TTRS and we ask that you support your children at home by using programmes like ‘Times Tables Rockstars’ and ‘Hit the Button’, aiming to answer questions in under 4 seconds.

In science, we will study animals, including humans, with a focus on the digestive system. This will include investigating the function of the teeth and mouth and follow the journey of food through the body’s organs. We will ask scientific questions, then plan and carry out various investigations to support our learning.

PE days are Monday and Thursday and with Mondays being in the hall and Thursdays being outside.

In computing, we will focus on developing students’ computer literacy before moving on to coding using Scratch.

PDL and RSE will focus on family relationships and what makes a family. We will explore being welcoming to others using the text “Beegu” and learn about assertiveness through the text “Dogs Don’t Do Ballet.”

In RE, we will understand how religious stories convey messages. Before Christmas, we will explore the meaning of Advent for Christians and hold our own Christingle Service at St Mary’s Church in Alverstoke parents/carers are welcome to join us.

Summer Term 2025

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Easter break. The Year 4 team is excited to embark on a fun-filled and enriching Summer Term of learning and discovery.

Literacy This term, we will be exploring a range of genres, including poetry, fiction, and non-fiction writing. Children will develop their persuasive writing skills, craft documentary-style speeches inspired by David Attenborough, and enhance their performance skills through poetry recitations. In Guided Reading, we will continue studying our whole-class reader, The Sleeping Sword.

Mathematics Our Maths learning will build on our understanding of decimals before moving on to measurement topics, including money and time. After May half-term, we will focus on properties of shapes, position, and direction, making use of our outdoor learning spaces. Children are encouraged to continue practising their times tables regularly using Times Table Rockstars and Hit the Button in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check in June.

Science and gSTEM This term, we will investigate the fascinating topics of sound and states of matter. Our gSTEM project will see children applying their scientific knowledge by designing and testing water filtration systems. These studies will be closely linked to our Literacy work, allowing for a cross-curricular approach to learning.

In Computing, we will continue developing our programming skills, using Scratch and Crumble kits to create interactive projects and enhance problem-solving abilities.

History We will delve into the captivating world of Ancient Greece, exploring its influence on modern life. Children will learn about the origins of the Olympics, Greek democracy, food, settlements, and daily life in this remarkable civilisation.

Physical Education (PE) Our PE lessons will focus on outdoor athletics and adventure-based activities, making the most of our fantastic school grounds. These activities will help build confidence and teamwork, preparing children for our much-anticipated Summer Sports Day. Additionally, we are thrilled to be attending swimming lessons at Brune Park swimming pool—so don’t forget to bring your swimwear!

Art This term, we will begin by studying famous artists before focusing on influential Spanish artists and their diverse styles. Children will have the opportunity to experiment with different techniques and create their own inspired pieces.

Personal Development (PD) and Wellbeing We will continue to foster a growth mindset and celebrate mistakes as valuable learning opportunities. As part of our PD curriculum, we will explore The Flower by John Light and Red: A Crayon’s Story by Michael Hall. These texts will guide discussions on self-expression, confidence, and the importance of challenging stereotypes.

Religious Education (RE) In RE, we will explore themes of creation and worship, reflecting on their significance across different faiths and cultures.

Growing Up and Changing Bodies Later this term, we will introduce our unit on growing up and changing bodies. We will discuss the natural process of puberty, helping children understand the physical and emotional changes that occur as they transition from childhood to adulthood. This will include learning scientific vocabulary to support discussions in a respectful and informative way.

We are looking forward to an exciting term full of learning, creativity, and new experiences!

Spring Term 2025

The Year 4 team is excited for the Spring Term and all that we have planned.

In Literacy, we will be developing our descriptive language and use of higher-level vocabulary. We will then explore and have a go at creating some emotive narrative poetry to create a sense of fear. Then using a variety of figurative language techniques, we will be creating our very own adventure texts linked to the Secret Garden.

In Art, we will be developing our drawing skills to create a textured dragon’s eye. We will then create these out of clay and use a variety of colours to create a realistic replica.  Then we will be using oil pastels, learning different techniques such as blending and layering.

Using these techniques as well as drawing using charcoal, children will create scenes and characters for their adventure stories.

In Maths this term we will be revisiting division by 10 and 100. We will also be exploring Fractions and Decimals as well as maintaining a strong focus on Multiplication for the MCT test in June. The children are making fantastic use of TImes Table Rockstars and have developed some healthy competition which will be great for the new tournament running from  January up until February half term. Keep up the good practice everyone!

We will be concluding our Living Things Science topic this term, linking what we have learned so we can find out about different habitats and how animals adapt in order to survive. We  will be classifying animals according to their characteristics using decision trees and keys. Following this unit of work the children will carry out various experiments and investigations to learn about changing states of matter.

Geography and History come together in our Local History Project this term where we will learn about Gosport and its rich history during the Victorian Period. Children will locate Gosport on a map and locate countries and cities around it. They will explore key landmarks and look at how Gosport has changed through the years. They will consider key events and how they have impacted on life in Gosport today. They will then travel back in time and experience what life was like in a real Victorian schoolhouse.

PE this term is full of adventure as we make use of our wonderful school grounds to enjoy outdoor orienteering activities, invasion games and gymnastics. These activities promote team building, problem-solving and navigation skills as well as being a good way for children to develop self-confidence. Whilst gymnastics will be focusing on core skills developing strength, balance and coordination.

PD this term will see us celebrating our mistakes and developing our growth mindset so that we can recognise our own strengths. We will continue to discuss our emotions and the importance of relaxation and looking after our mental health including learning about loss and bereavement and how we can support and help those experiencing it. We will also continue to learn about our diverse society, including different families. The story of King and King by Linda de Hann and Stern Nijl and will be read and used as a discussion point so that we can develop our understanding of what marriage and civil partnerships are. This links in with our RE topic for this term which looks at Mahashivaratri (devotion).

The Year 4 team are really looking forward to the term ahead.  If you have any questions or other enquiries relating to any of the above then please do not hesitate to email the Y4 Team.
