This is another lovely moment from the end of last term that we are keen to celebrate. Alexander attended a wheelchair basketball session with his family, and it proved to be an inspiring experience. They thoroughly enjoyed watching the game and meeting the team, who were incredibly welcoming. The players took time to let the pupils have a go in the wheelchairs, practise shooting some baskets, and offered tips and encouragement throughout.
The team also explained how wheelchair basketball works, including how player classifications change each year and why fundraising is essential to keep the sport accessible and sustainable. This has already sparked thoughtful conversations about how we might support them in the future, possibly through a charity wheelchair basketball match or a similar event. We were also delighted to hear that Alexander’s dad has nominated the team for a donation through his workplace advent calendar for sports teams.
This experience links beautifully with the Odyssey Challenge, which encourages children to develop character, leadership, service and social responsibility through real-world experiences. It also highlights the purpose of our Citizenship Club: helping pupils understand their role in society, appreciate diversity, and recognise how small actions can make a meaningful difference.
A huge thank you to Alexander’s family for sharing this experience with us. It is a wonderful example of our children living out our values of honesty, faith and courage beyond the school gates.
