As part of our continued focus on STEM learning, our pupils in 5LL recently took part in an exciting Plastic Challenge, linking directly to the themes explored during Science Week in March.

Children were set the task of using recycled plastic materials to design and create something new. This wasn’t just about making, it was about thinking like engineers. Pupils drew upon their engineering habits of mind, including creativity, problem-solving, improving ideas, and working systematically.

The results were fantastic! From innovative models to purposeful designs, children demonstrated:

  • Imagination in transforming everyday waste into something meaningful
  • Resilience in testing, refining and improving their creations
  • Collaboration and communication as they shared ideas and solutions

This challenge helped bring Science Week to life, reinforcing key messages around sustainability, environmental responsibility and real-world problem solving. It also gave pupils the opportunity to see how STEM skills can be used to tackle global challenges, such as reducing plastic waste.
