We were delighted to welcome the Material World: Engineering the Future roadshow to school and what an experience it was! This production blended live theatre, science and storytelling to make STEM unforgettable. Our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils were treated to a fast-paced, interactive performance brought to life by professional actors, audience participation and plenty of wow moments.

The 45-minute show followed characters Alex, Jody and Harry as they created a live TV show exploring the fascinating world of materials science. Through a fun and energetic session, students discovered how the materials we use every day connect to cutting-edge developments in aerospace, engineering and beyond. From growing their own bioplastic using cornflour and PVA glue, to making slime that reacts to magnets, testing waterproof fabrics and exploring the weird world of non-Newtonian fluids (is it a solid? is it a liquid? both!), our pupils got hands-on with real scientific concepts in a way they won’t forget in a hurry.

The roadshow is funded by BAE Systems, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, and has been inspiring young people across Great Britain since 2005. As well as being brilliant fun, the day sparked some wonderful conversations about future careers in materials science and engineering. Could we have a future rocket designer, eco-packaging inventor or medical device builder among us? We would like to think so!

A huge thank you to the entire roadshow team for bringing science so brilliantly to life.
