Year 6 were very lucky to welcome Chartwells into school for an exciting and informative food workshop: Chickpeas Three Ways.

During the session, the children explored the important issue of food waste and discussed how we can reduce it by using ingredients in different and creative ways, rather than only using them in the ways we might usually expect. The focus then turned to chickpeas and the variety of healthy, tasty dishes that can be made from this simple ingredient.

Working in three groups, the children prepared hummus, protein balls and a chickpea salad. They learnt a range of practical skills along the way, from mashing ingredients and preparing food safely, to remembering not to use the whole basil stalk in a salad! They also took responsibility for cleaning up after themselves and discussed the importance of minimising waste wherever possible.

Once the dishes had been prepared, all of the children had the opportunity to taste each of the delicious foods made during the workshop. It was a fantastic hands-on experience, and the children learnt a great deal about healthy eating, food preparation and reducing food waste.

A huge thank you to Chartwells for providing such an excellent workshop for our Year 6 pupils.
